Beyond LHS Program |
Beyond LHS is an exciting opportunity for students to step into their future. The purpose of the Beyond LHS program is to partner with students, parents, and Linn Benton Community College (LBCC) to provide a supported bridge between Lebanon High School (LHS) and the student's early college experience. The program is designed to smooth the transition between the two settings and increase the success of our students as they transition to college. Support with the costs of tuition and books, as well as with registration, orientation, appropriate course selection and monitoring of academic progress is provided through the program. Students may take classes through LBCC, at any of the college's campuses (Albany, Lebanon, Corvallis, or Sweet Home). "How is this possible?", "It sounds too good to be true!", and "What's the catch?" are common reactions. In the past, most of our graduating seniors expressed an interest in attending college immediately after high school, but few actually did so. The administration of the Lebanon Community School District has been deeply committed to assisting LHS graduates in overcoming barriers to college attendance be they academic, financial or cultural. It is hoped that Beyond LHS can help more Lebanon High School graduates see college as a realistic possibility. This dream gained momentum when the Oregon Legislature passed the Expanded Options law which required that high schools in Oregon provide their students with a minimal amount of access to early college options while still enrolled at high school. Beyond LHS is available to students who are enrolled at LHS and have an Educational Plan and Profile (EPP) that supports a transition from high school to college. Current LHS students are referred to the program by their academy counselors after having met with the student and determined that the Beyond LHS program fits with the student's EPP. Students who are not currently enrolled in LHS but wish to become enrolled or transfer into LHS in order to gain access to Beyond LHS should contact the program's coordinator, Kimberly Fandino, at (541) 451-8555 x 1074, or at Kimberly.Fandino@lebanon.k12.or.us. After being referred to Beyond LHS, students are administered LBCC's Computerized Placement Tests (CPT); an assessment used to determine placement levels in reading, writing and math at LBCC. This test is standard for all students entering LBCC and guides the course selection process. The student then meets with a counselor at LHS and one from LBCC to create an LBCC course selection plan that aligns with their ability level (as indicated by the placement test) and their career and educational goals (as indicated by the student's EPP). This course selection plan becomes the set of classes for which Beyond LHS will provide support for as long as the student remains eligible for the program. |
